First Days in the Capital – Heraklion
Our adventure began in Heraklion, the island’s largest city and cultural heart. We spent two days there, discovering historical sites and savoring local cuisine. Heraklion combines rich history with a lively modern vibe. Walking its streets, you’ll find remnants of ancient civilizations alongside Venetian and Ottoman architecture.

The highlight was the Rocca a Mare Fortress – a massive Venetian structure guarding the harbor entrance. Built in the 16th century, it still impresses with monumental walls and a strategic location. Inside, we explored exhibitions on the city’s history and its role as an important Mediterranean trade hub. A stroll along the seaside promenade revealed history at every turn.

And, of course, culinary delights were an essential part of our experience. Heraklion offers everything from modern restaurants with global-inspired menus to traditional tavernas serving authentic Cretan flavors. We indulged in fresh seafood – grilled squid, shrimp, and octopus – as well as aromatic cheeses, olives, and classics like moussaka, souvlaki, and Greek salad. Every dish was enhanced by the richness of local olive oil.

Evenings were magical – sipping local wines like Vilana and Kotsifali while enjoying the gentle sea breeze and live music. Life on Crete flows at a slower pace, revolving around good food, conversation, and the beauty of its surroundings.

Wine Tasting – Three Exceptional Wineries
The Heraklion region is Crete’s largest wine-producing area, home to most local vineyards and wines with protected designations of origin. Naturally, we couldn’t miss the chance to explore the world of Cretan winemaking.

We joined a wine tour, hopping into a comfortable van to journey through picturesque vineyards. We visited two authentic wineries, learning about traditional methods and tasting a variety of wines. Native varieties like Vilana, Liatiko, and Kotsifali stole the show, paired perfectly with local delicacies. At the second winery, we enjoyed a wine-paired lunch, featuring Cretan dishes prepared by a local taverna – a true feast of flavors.

This day was one of the most memorable experiences of our honeymoon, full of aromas, tastes, and stories that reflected centuries-old traditions.

Knossos Ruins – Following the Footsteps of Minoan Civilization
A trip to Crete wouldn’t be complete without visiting the Palace of Knossos, one of Greece’s most important archaeological sites. According to mythology, this is where the Labyrinth of the Minotaur was located – the creature imprisoned by King Minos.

Walking through the vast complex, we admired preserved frescoes depicting scenes of ancient Cretan life, their vivid colors still enchanting after thousands of years. The iconic red columns and intricate palace layout hint at the advanced civilization that thrived here.

The mystery of Knossos continues to intrigue historians – was it truly a royal palace or perhaps a temple complex? Its labyrinthine design likely inspired the legend. Visiting Knossos feels like stepping back into the ancient world and connecting with one of Europe’s earliest civilizations.
Peaceful Escape at Thalori Retreat
After busy days exploring, we headed to Thalori Retreat, a stunning mountain village retreat offering tranquility, nature, and authentic Cretan charm. Long walks on scenic trails and dinners overlooking sunset-soaked hills made this one of the most magical moments of our trip.

Luxury at The Nest Resort
Next, we experienced modern luxury at The Nest Resort near Hersonissos. Surrounded by green hills, this elegant resort offered private villas with pools, a spa, and a fine dining restaurant featuring local specialties. Perfect for honeymooners seeking a blend of luxury, serenity, and proximity to Crete’s top attractions.

Agios Nikolaos – A Seaside Gem
Agios Nikolaos, set on the sparkling Mirabello Bay, charmed us with its vibrant yet relaxed atmosphere. We wandered along the harbor, admiring chic yachts and colorful fishing boats, soaking in the unique coastal vibe.

Spinalonga – The Island of Secrets
One of the most emotional highlights of our trip was Spinalonga, a small island with a dramatic past. Its Venetian fortress, built in the 16th century, later served as one of Europe’s last leper colonies. Walking among the ruins, we felt the weight of its history and imagined the lives of those who once lived there.
Today, Spinalonga captivates visitors with its powerful story and breathtaking views over the turquoise waters of Mirabello Bay.

Crete – The Perfect Honeymoon Destination
Our two weeks on Crete were filled with unforgettable moments. This island blends history, nature, and gastronomy, creating the ideal setting for relaxation and discovery. Every corner holds something special, and we already know we’ll return.
