Where Does the Magic Begin?

The hike starts from a small parking area on Military Road (R115), where a path leads down to the shore of Lough Bray Upper. Right from the beginning, you’ll cross a small stream – a little challenge that adds to the charm of the adventure. The trail, although faint in places, runs along the lake, offering breathtaking views.

Hiking Through Wild Landscapes

The route is about 6.7 km (4.1 miles) long, with an elevation gain of 286 m, making it moderately difficult – ideal for hikers with average fitness. The hike takes around 2 hours and 10 minutes to complete. Along the way, you’ll pass Lough Bray House, a former 19th-century hunting lodge, now a private residence. The trail meanders through heather-covered moorlands, rocky slopes, and along cliffs, offering spectacular views of the lakes and surrounding hills.

Practical Tips for Lough Bray Loop

  • Getting There: Best accessed by car. The parking area on Military Road is small and fills up quickly, especially on weekends. Alternatively, park at Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation, which adds about 4 km to your hike.

  • Weather: Irish weather can be unpredictable. Check the forecast before heading out and be prepared for sudden changes.

  • Gear: Sturdy hiking boots are essential, especially after rain when the ground can be muddy. Bring a map or an offline trail app, as the path is unmarked.

  • Safety: Do not leave valuables in your car. Break-ins have been reported at the Military Road parking lot.
